What are the general requirements from a doctor for a specific
post at SHO/SpR and Consultant levels?
Senior House Officer (SHO) : Otherwise known as basic surgical training.
The duties of SHO include admission of elective/ day case patients and
pre and post-operative work-up. The operative experience involves basic
surgical aspects.
Specialist Registrar (SpR) : Otherwise known as higher surgical training.
The duties of SpR include providing middle grade cover for elective /
emergency admissions, conducting clinics and operative sessions.
The operative experience centres on supervised performance of regular
surgical conditions and assisting major/complex procedures.
Consultant : Consultants are expected to take a lead role in outpatient,
inpatient and operative decision-making process.
What level of English Language fluency is required?
Clear spoken English is required. We expect all doctors to have all the
basic components to carry out a conversation.
Do you require any formal language certification (e.g IELTS)
We do not require any formal certification of IELTS to be able to offer the
doctor locum work.
What is the minimum and maximum contract length available?
1 day – 2 Years
For doctors with no previous UK experience, initial contract should be a
minimum of 1 month to allow for a suitable induction to UK NHS.
Once a locum has UK experience we are able to offer work scheduled
around the doctors availability.
How soon can I start working from the moment I first contact
you provided that:
1) I am GMC registered
You are able to start working immediately once we have:
Core criteria
Passport/Visa
Satisfactory Police Check from country of Residence dated within 3 months pre-deployment
Up to date CV
2 References each within one year, 1 from most recent employer
Occupational Health Testing:
Hep B titre level > 100
Competency in written and spoken English

Is previous UK experience required for any of the posts
( SHO/SpR/Consultant)?
This is dependent on individual hospital requirements. However
most hospitals would be willing to appoint an SHO or SpR with
no previous UK experience
Are there any training opportunities provided?
In what situations?
Training opportunities are available. These are usually based
on individual hospital requirements. Usually it is the teaching
hospitals that are able to offer training requirements to
European doctors.
Will I have the same responsibilities/obligations as
full-time employed doctors in the hospital?
Yes
Will I be employed by you or the hospital?
Will I receive a contract of employment and who will be the payer?
You will be employed by us. You will receive a contract of employment and
payment for your work through us.
As a locum doctor will I be entitled to the holiday pay?
What are the conditions/rules describing the above?
We will include holiday pay for PAYE doctors within the hourly rate.
Limited Company doctors are not entitled to holiday, however Limited
Company locums also have a higher paid hourly rate.
Who pays for my GMC registration if I do not possess one?
In certain circumstances, we will be able to pay for a locum’s
GMC registration. We will claim this back once a doctor is working for us.
We will negotiate this on an individual basis with each doctor and client.
Key factors to determine whether we would subsidise the registration is
on availability and potential length of assignments moving forward for
the doctor.
How many hours a week will I normally work? Are there any
on-call opportunities available?
Locums will usually work a minimum of 40 hours per week. Often doctors
are also offered on-calls to compliment the standard hours. It is not unusual
to see locums having the opportunity to work 60+ hours a week with on calls

What medical documents/certification I need to provide on application?
We will provide locums with an application form to fill out pre registration.
Initial criteria to register is an Up to Date CV as minimum.
Do I need to write a customized medical CV or will you provide me with a
ready to fill-in template of such?
We will be able to provide you with a template to construct your CV,
however we will also accept pre-designed CVs.
Once my CV is accepted will I have to go through any kind
of interview with you or with the hospitals I am going to
work for?
Once a doctor has UK experience no interview will be required.
It is possible that upon first placement there may be a telephone
interview with the departmental consultant.
Will I need a Criminal check ? At what stage of my application process
you will require that from me? Who will be paying for that?
We require a Police Check from your country of origin. Once you have entered
the UK, we will apply for a CRB check. ID Medical will pay for this.

What is the average net hourly rate for different grade doctors
SHO/SpR/Consultant?
Pay rates:
All pay rates are based upon experience and subject to negotiation
SHO £15p/h – £30p/h
SpR/Staff Grade £25p/h – £50p/h
Consultant – £45p/h – £65p/h
What are the factors that might influence the level of
my hourly rate ?
The level of your UK experience will have a direct reflection on the hourly
rate available.
Responsibilities
Will I be provided with the outline of my duties and responsibilities in
writing before commencing a job? At what stage?
This will be provided to you upon your induction to the hospital.
Accommodation
Do you offer any assistance regarding the accommodation?
What is the typical renting cost (weekly/monthly)?
Often the hospital will provide accommodation which on many occasions is free
or subject to a small charge i.e. £15 per night.
We are also able to offer assistance in securing accommodation, i.e. apartment
or a house for longer term bookings.
What is the suggested approach regarding accommodation in
case of very short contracts (weekend or less than 1 month),
provided that I do not have the family/friends to stay with and
I will be unable to find affordable accommodation other than
a hotel for that period?
We are able to offer assistance in securing a Hotel or Bed and Breakfast. On most
occasions hospital accommodation will be the easiest option. In certain circumstances
we can cover the cost of any hotel where necessary.
Travel
Do you cover any costs of my travel to and from the UK ( flights, buses, taxi )?
This is subject to each individual hospital booking. You will be made aware before being confirmed for the booking of the travel subsidies.
Payment
Will the company establish a UK Bank Account for me?
If yes, what bank/banks do you deal with?
We are able to offer assistance in establishing a UK bank account.
We currently work with all UK banks
When will I be paid in the following situations?:
a) 2 day weekend employment
Providing you submit your timesheet 1 day after completion of booking
you will be paid within 3-5 working days.
b) 1 week employment
3-5 Working days post worked week
c) 3 month employment
within 3-5 days on weekly basis
Taxes
What are the rates of personal income tax in the UK?
The rate of income tax paid is calculated upon the amount that is earned by the doctor.
We are able to offer more information on a case by case basis.
Do you offer any alternatives regarding the tax payment in the UK
( e.g limited company formation)?
The vast majority of our locums take advantage of our umbrella services provider
and form a Limited Company. We are able to offer full assistance in establishing this.
This process can take as little as one day.
Indemnity Insurance
Will I be covered by medical indemnity insurance?
If yes, who will be paying for that?
Doctors will not be automatically be covered by medical indemnity insurance.
